Green and Growing: A Greenhouse for OHCS

Our School Greenhouse Is Now Filled with Living Things!

If you’ve glanced out back recently, you may have noticed a new addition to our campus—a greenhouse! We’re excited to announce that it is officially up and running, and already teeming with life. Inside you’ll find a variety of plants, including parsley, jalapeños, Carolina Reaper peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes and a few others just beginning to take root.

In the coming weeks, we’ll be adding more plants as well as structural upgrades like shelving to make the greenhouse even more functional and inviting. This space is an exciting opportunity for our students to learn about plant life and stewardship firsthand.

How You Can Use the Greenhouse Teachers are encouraged to bring their classes out to the greenhouse. The students can observe the plants’ growth and get an up close look at the different leaves, seeing how each is unique to a particular plant. It’s a wonderful place for journaling, observations or hands-on learning about how food grows. Feel free to check on the plants each week.

We Need Student Helpers! To keep everything flourishing, the plants need to be watered several times a day. This is a great opportunity for students to take part in the daily care of the greenhouse environment. The planter bags are permeable, so overwatering isn’t a concern.

There will usually be a bucket of water left inside the greenhouse, but water is also accessible from the hose near the playground. Bring a small container for carrying water to make things easier.

A Space for Learning Please remind students that the greenhouse is not a playground. It’s a space for observation and responsible care of plants. Each seedling and sprout represents a learning opportunity, and we want to see them thrive.

We’re excited to watch this space grow and to see how the students grow along with it.
